Original Lionel Prewar Hiawatha Passenger Set. I acquired this set from original owner probably 35 years or so ago. I never ran it on my layout but had it displayed on shelving until it was packed away about 10 years ago. 250E Steam Locomotive Engine/no box. I track tested the engine and it runs forward…. Runs very quietly and smoothly. The e-unit is “sticky” and at times you have to tap the top of the engine to get it to rotate. This engine has the thicker boiler casting and also the diecast front truck (see close up pic) which is the more desirable variation of this engine to find. 250W 12-Wheel Whistle Tender/no box. Track tested and whistle and whistle relay work… However, it “groans and grinds” and is in need of lubrication. I didn’t want to take the time to dismantle the tender to lubricate it so I will leave this up to the new owner. 782 Head End Passenger Car/OB… Nice solid original box still sealed at one end. The die cast head end casting is broken on the underside where the stud for connecting the tender should be. I simply inserted a screw/nut and this worked well while I had it displayed… See close up pic. Both sides of the car are pictured. There is warp-age of the maroon frame on this car which is not uncommon. Up for your consideration is a Vintage Prewar Lionel O Gauge 250E Hiawatha Steam Engine & 250W Whistle Tender in C6+ – VERY GOOD + CONDITION. THE 250E RUNS in BOTH DIRECTIONS, THE “E” UNIT WORKS and THE LIGHT WORKS. THE TENDER WHISTLE SPINS BUT IT DOES NOT WHISTLE. I don’t think there is anything major wrong. Check pictures for details. Diecast streamlined CM&StP Hiawatha loco, made 1935 to early 40s, with 250W metal tender that has drawbar for streamlined passenger cars. Loco and tender only in this listing, are matched early pair, has sheet-metal front truck and weight in loco cab and early type whistle in tender. L&T are about 22.5 long together, made for wide-radius 072 track. Original finish has some wear, mostly edges and pilot on loco, finish is stable, not flaking. Tender finish has a bit more wear as shown. Loco was difficult to get running, but finally did after cleaning E-unit and exercise. It still may be a bit finicky and 2 drive wheels have slight fatigue-swell, ran OK on straight track. Tender whistle was loose on mount and not grounded right, so a rubber shim and ground wire were added. Whistle motor runs, but not much whistle sound. Early whistle chambers tended to leak air, causing this situation. All Items, including N. (new-old-stock), are graded and represented as vintage collectibles. Very Nice Original Lionel PreWar Hiawatha Passenger Sets. One of the premier prewar O gauge sets. The set is very clean and ready for display. I will describe in detail so PLEASE READ. 250E Steam Locomotive Engine/no box. Track tested and runs forward…. At first the eunit was alittle sticky but this improved immediately after just a minute or so. It still gets hung up occassionally in one of the forward gears I think that the e-unit drum may have a small “notch” that is causing this in the one rotation… And if you are familiar with repairing/replacing e-unit drums you will know what I mean. I was very surprized at how quietly and smoothly the engine ran. I have had this in my possesion for 30+ years and it was not run but just displayed in my train room until it was packed away about 5 years ago. This engine has the thicker boiler casting and also the diecast front truck (see close up pic) which is the harder variation of this engine to find. 250W 12-Wheel Whistle Tender/no box.
