This item has been graded per TCA standards C-5: Good based on visual appearance. The end panels are missing, causing the construction to come loose in certain places. The chassis is pushed up into the shell a bit. There is wear on the wheels & pickups. The pickups might not be the originals. There is surface rust and dirt residue in the axles, and on some of the wheels. The body shows scratches and dirt residue. The window inserts have yellowed or are coming loose. The overall appearance of this item may be improved with a gentle and thorough cleaning. The instruction manual is not included. The original box is not included. The 2623 was the ancestor of the better known Postwar Era 2625-28 Madison cars. It features a Tuscan painted bakelite body, interior illumination, stamped metal trucks, box couplers, and it measures approximately 15 inches in length. LIONEL PREWAR VERY SCARCE 2624 MANHATTAN W/ TWO IRVINGTON PULLMAN CARS. This is a very scarce 2624 Manhattan Pullman with its two matching 2623 Irvington Pullmans. I believe these would have come with a 225E or 763E passenger set in 1940 or 1941. These cars that were stamped “2624” were meant to be observation cars to be pulled behind two or three Pullmans. They were never produced with the rear platform, and thus, were made into Pullmans. These three cars are a matched set with the lighter brown paint, which is correct according to my research. There are a few areas of paint loss and a missing step on one 2623. The roofs are overall pretty clean with some common spotting as shown. However, they are cleaner and have better paint than many others I have seen. All couplers are present. The window strips are all present and in good condition. Overall, this is a nice scarce matched prewar set that does not come up often. There are no original boxes. It’s what I do. Message me for more info. Take a close look at the many photos for a better sense of condition. Everything is pretty clearly shown in the photos. If I happen to misstate something in the description, please let the photos tell the story (ie, if I state there is no tape on a box, even though the photos show obvious tape, assume there is tape). If you have any questions or see any discrepancies, please let me know. As one would not expect to drive off in a “barn find” 30 year old automobile, do the same here. It may or may not need service. Three Prewar Manhattan Cars. The 2623 Cars were made for one year only in 1941 and were the predecessor too the far more common and much in demand post war Madison Cars. The cars came numbered as 2623 Manhattan and 2623 Irvington and were cataloged in three premium sets. They came with 225E, 226E and of course the 763E locomotives. These cars are painted Tuscan Red over Bakelite body with heat stamped lettering. And have 6 wheel trucks and type III box couplers. 2623 Manhattan Passenger Car with rough box. The condition of the 1. 2623 Manhattan Car is VG Condition. All original steps in place. Oxidation on the vestibule casting and metal. The 2623 Irvington Scarce! Is in Fair- good condition. Has two intact steps, one repaired and is missing one step. There is paint lost on the Bakelite (common problem on these cars) as shown in. There is oxidation on the metal vestibule ends and on the wheels. The IRVINGTON car is very scarce as it was known to come in only one of the three sets available. The second 2623 Manhattan is in poor shape. Only one step remains, a couple assembly is missing and there is paint loss on the roof from a scratch. The coupler assembly can be found from time to time online and trucks are commonly available. But you can run the entire set with the rear coupler missing of course. The paint matches on all three of these cars very close. They came out of the same set from an estate. Unfortunately, all the trains in this estate were subject to. Wet basement for years. The 2623 Manhattan/Irvington Passenger Cars are among the most sought after and in demand prewar passenger cars. Getting a set, even in this condition is a feather in a pre-war collection. I have not tried to remove any of the visible oxidation but have found that with some mild cleaning this zinc oxidation can sometimes be removed.
