Greetings & best wishes from Mr. Allied and welcome to my sale! Pleas e have confidence in my 100% honest descriptions and please read the following carefully. This is an Original, Lionel, Pre-War, No. 226E Steam Type Locomotive and No. 2226WX Die-Cast Metal, Whistle Tender, Circa 1938 or so. The 226E was the largest, die-cast, steam loco produced by Lionel in the pre-war years, short of the legendary Hudson locos. The loco & tender hooked together measure approx. 21.5 long and they weigh a whopping 8.4 pounds! I bench tested it and it runs well, but the E-unit hangs up now and then. The whistle blows and the headlight works. These locos are also equipped with a “firebox” light and that works as well. The whole loco could use a good cleaning, lubrication, etc. Or, one might wish to completely restore this loco & tender–maybe do a gunmetal gray paint job! The bakelite coal pile is unbroken and the tender body casting is nice and straight. That all said, there are issues with these pieces, which are as follows. Looking at the photo of the front of the loco, the marker light on the left side is very slightly bent. The smokebox door does open and close with a nice snap. One corner of the cab roof is very slightly bent, but I see no cracks. The handrails are a bit bent and may or may not be the originals. There is no electric uncoupling mechanism for the tender coupler. The lettering on the tender is a bit messed up, please see photos. There may be some replacement parts, could be some repainted parts, I’m not really sure. Anyway, t hese old eyes of mine are not what they used to be, so I ask that YOU take the time to “ZOOM IN” and look the photos over closely, to determine for yourself just what we have here.
